Education at it’s finest! Every child needs to know these things. I’m sure this was part of the No Child Left Behind Act. They just forgot one thing, I love to shampoo and condition my mustache… makes it soft and kissable.

HACHUU!

Welcome back BYU! One week ago was the first day of school after an all too short summer term off. Well, to be honest, I am ready for school to start again and I’m excited to get back into a set schedule. There is something comforting about knowing that I will have plenty to do. I find joy in productivity and I was tired of scraping the bottom of the barrel to be productive with my life. First week overall…. Good! I haven’t been super overwhelmed with my classes but that could just be because I LOVE my schedule! I have such amazing professors and the subject matter will definitely be interesting. I’m hoping to share some of what I learn on this blog.

I was a bit shocked that I really don’t know a lot of people in my classes this year. My Russian boys that I’ve studied with most have all moved on and are hitting the career world. I also haven’t seen a lot of people I know walking around campus. I hope that changes… Sometimes that really helps to keep me going.

I hope to be just as consistent with my blog, even though I am in school. Life is busy but I want to keep posting. It helps me to think about life from a different perspective. That’s good for me right now.

Character, Education, Julia, Neil A Maxwell, Quote, Teacher

My best friend, Julia, started her first day teaching middle school today! She has put in a lot of work to prepare for her students and I am confident that she will be an amazing teacher. Being an educator is no easy task and it requires a lot of sacrifice. Growing up I never realized what a daunting task our teachers were up against. I mean I enjoyed school but I never truly understood all their hard work that made my education possible. Watching Julia prepare for her students has opened my eyes to how grateful I need to be to all of my teachers. Thanks to all of my teachers!

I’m no expert about education but I do love a good discussion about teaching methods and ideology. I have my own ideas about what works and what doesn’t but there is one thing that I know for certain… a teacher’s character far out weighs the methods or the subject matter that they teach. I found this quote today in my studies, I love it!

“My own memories of my teachers at Granite High… are basically now distilled into what they were in terms of their character. Forgotten are the specific lesson menus, but I remember the chefs! It’s likely to be that way with you. You will be remembered not only for what you taught but even more for what you are.”
-Neil A Maxwell

Julia’s students are one lucky group! Not only am I sure that her lessons are AWESOME but I know that who she is inspires those around her. She has a way to make everyone feel important. She really cares about others, especially her students. Her students will love her and remember her because she is a true friend. Here’s to Julia and all the other teachers who have inspired us, taught us, and befriended us! Good luck with the beginning of a new school year!

Education, Islam, Life, Religion

I read this article and was thoroughly impressed. So in short, this school in Michigan is holding all night football practices between the hours of 11pm and 4am. Sound crazy? I think not…

The reason? 90% of the boys who play for Fordson high school adhere to Islam. For those that aren’t aware, Muslims all around the world are in the middle of the month-long Ramadan fast. Rather than subjecting their boys to the risk of dehydration during practice, the coaches at Fordson hold their practices at night when eating and drinking is allowed. The thing that I love the most about this article is the fact that these coaches understand their players. The school is adapting to make it work for them. Would this type of schedule work for everyone? No. But it works for them. True education is about knowing those who you teach and adapting to meet their needs. My praise goes out to Fordson High….
