“Do not expect that all will go smoothly throughout your life, even those who are living as they should. Sometimes, we’ll find it just the opposite. It won’t go smoothly. Meet each of life’s challenges with the optimism and surety that you will have peace and faith to sustain you now and in the future. For those who do not yet have all the blessings you feel you want, if your life is empty in one reason or another, I firmly believe that no experience, no opportunity essential for redemption and salvation will be denied you who live faithfully.
Remain worthy. Be hopeful, patient and prayerful. Things have a way of working out. The gift of the Holy Ghost will guide you and direct your actions.”

– President Boyd K Packer

My Harry Potter devotion continues to grow… I watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the other day. It just keeps getting better. I loved the theme of being alone that was carried out through the entire movie. The first reference that I caught was during the first real conversation between Harry and Luna Lovegood.

Luna Lovegood: [about her father] We believe you, by the way. That He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is back, and you fought him, and the Ministry and the Prophet are conspiring against you and Dumbledore.

Harry Potter: Thanks. Seems you’re about the only ones that do.

Luna Lovegood: I don’t think that’s true. But I suppose that’s how he wants you to feel.

Harry Potter: What do you mean?

Luna Lovegood: Well if I were You-Know-Who, I’d want you to feel cut off from everyone else. Because if it’s just you alone you’re not as much of a threat.

There is so much truth to this! Let’s take “You-Know-Who” and replace that with Satan for a minute. He wants us to feel ALONE! He wants us to feel like no one really cares. If he can convince us of this, he has won half the battle. If you feel alone, take courage! Stand up to the adversary. Don’t let him in! Don’t let him put thoughts of doubt or fear into your mind!” You are never really alone! In the words of our beloved prophet, “May we ever be courageous and prepared to stand for what we believe, and if we must stand alone in the process, may we do so courageously, strengthened by the knowledge that in reality we are never alone when we stand with our Father in Heaven.” (Found here

I love one of the final scenes in the movie where Harry is having an internal battle with Voldemort. His friends are all standing by, cheering him on, not about to leave. How often do we have personal battles or struggles that really only we can fight? But I assure you that your friends are standing by! God is always lifting, helping, and encouraging. He loves you! You are never alone!

Thanks to all my wonderful friends and family who continue to stand by my side and cheer me on, even though their problems often far outweigh my own. Cheers to you!

A question of time…

So I was watching short films the other day and ran across this one. I think the film is well-done and has an interesting message. Beware that you will not be left with feel goods and smiles after watching. So if you’re having a bad day, I would suggest you watch this another day. But it’s worth the watch… and I’ll do my best to bring you back up afterwards with some of my own thoughts.

Part I

Part II

“We cannot change what has already happened…”

This film moved me. As I continue to think about the message and the themes of this video, I have some thoughts stirring inside my head that I’d like to share with you. I love the little boys question to his father near the beginning of the first video when he asks, “What happened to grandpa?” and “Will he ever come back?” Such innocent yet sincere questions that I believe we all face at some point or another in our lives. What does happen to us when we die? I have another video that I would like to share that I fully support in the answering of this question.

Follow this link to watch this video

I know that we can be together with loved ones forever. I know that through God’s plan, we can feel comfort now when we lose those we love. Heavenly Father loves us so much!

The next thought that I had about this film is that we always have choices to make to change our future. Like the quote above says, “We cannot change what has already happened.” I would like to add that we always have control over the choices we make in the future. Dwelling in the past will never get us anywhere. We can learn from the past but ultimately we have the ability today and tomorrow to have a new beginning. I love this quote found Here

“Each new day that dawns can be a new day for us to begin to change. We can change our environment. We can change our lives by substituting new habits for old. We can mold our character and future by purer thoughts and nobler actions. As someone once put it, ‘The possibility of change is always there, with its hidden promise of peace, happiness, and a better way of life.'”

Let’s make the necessary changes in our lives to be HAPPY! That’s what God wants! Don’t let passed mistakes weigh you down. Don’t let the previous would haves hold you back. Just CHOOSE now to start again. To get back up, and to fight back, and to have JOY!

A book of mormon story…

I really like this video! First of all, the movie is well done and I think there are not only some neat shots but also some great animation. I also like the content. Like Chris, I too know that the Book of Mormon is true. There is a promise at the end of the book that if you read it it, pray about it, and ask God, then you will get an answer from God that it is true. (Read the promise here) I have done this and I know without a doubt that God answers prayers. Really, He answers prayers! He not only answers them but He answers in a very personal way, leaving no doubt that He loves you and knows you. I have come to know God better by reading the Book of Mormon and that has made all the difference in my life.

One of my favorite versus from the Book of Mormon says that, “it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief” (Found here) I know that God is a God of miracles. Watch for His miracles daily in your life and you will see them. One way that I have built my faith to see God’s miracles is through reading this book. If you have a copy, read it! Let God show you He loves you by putting faith in Him! If you don’t have a copy of this book, click the picture below to get a free copy. It will change your life!

Validation continued…

So I was reading another blog post about the Validation video that I posted yesterday and I liked some things that she said. It was a bit of a long read and wordy but I liked a few of the things that she said (I’m assuming a “she” wrote the post). Read her whole post here. Some clips from her post that I think are worth considering:

(You might want to watch the movie from my previous post if you haven’t already before reading)

“He, himself, turned into a gloomy, non-smiling person. When people came back for validation, they discovered he was not the person he used to be, and that he won’t make them feel good about themselves as he used to do, so they decided to leave right away… That reminded me of “real” and “not-so-real” friends… Everyone in this life… EVERYONE… has their “up-times” as well as their “down-times”… No matter how happy that person might always be, he is still human, and he might fall down for sometime… He might be the source of inspiration, support, and happiness for a lot of the people around him, however, when he gets into a down-phase, only REAL friends stick around to support him, and give him some of the encouragement, and inspiration that he has always given them, until he regains his strength and gets back to who he really is. The “Not-So-Real” ones disappear right away, if they don’t get what they want from him (in this situation; making them feel good about themselves), just like what happened in the movie!”

“Every one of us remembers this stranger/friend that once told them something good about their outfit, about their personality, about their handwriting, about their positive attitude, about their friendliness, about their children, or even about their smile! And we remember how it affected us at that time, and how it still makes us happy when we remember it now… So why don’t we do this more often??!!… When we feel this person has changed our lives in a certain way, or when we think that a certain person is worth being thanked or supported, why don’t we do it right away (if at all!)??”

“Victoria told Hugh: “yes… Because you are great… You are amazing!”, and he replied: “No one has said that about me before!”… That really touched me! Sometimes, we have someone in our lives… Someone who is always supportive, always loves to encourage us and loves to see us happy, but we seldom remember to thank them, and make them feel how amazing we think they are!”

Here’s to all my amazing friends! I have a lot of them! Several people have mentioned to me this last week that I have A LOT of great friends. They are right, I’ve been blessed with many many friends who stick around through the thick and thin, many GREAT friends. Thanks to ya’ll!

“You are great! You are Amazing!”

So you know when you’re having one of those days when…. well, no need to explain, you understand, “one of THOSE days”… You know the kind. I had one of them last week. My dear mother, who has always been a big support, called me and offered to bring me a vary large piece of apple pie. Mom and dad drove the 15 minutes to my house just to deliver. I was not as appreciative as I should have been that night, but it meant a lot to me. Small blessings are the real miracles in life. We didn’t talk much when they pulled up to my apartment, but my mom did mention a video from the you tubes that I should watch… Validation.

Not expecting much, I went back in my apartment, opened my lap top, turned to the youtube, and started to watch. I was blown away! Great job mom for finding this little gold nugget. This is not an IF you have fifteen minutes to watch this movie, this is a MAKE 15 minutes available to watch this. If you don’t have the time right now, come back to it. Great clip!

I want to be more like him… I’m setting the goal to be more complimentary of others and to stop talking about all of MY problems. You never know how things are going to work out in the end anyways!

“I want to be in a relationship where you telling me you love me is just a ceremonious validation of what you already show me.”

Doesn’t this place sound fun? I first discovered this restaurant while lost somewhere on the highway between Springville and Mapleton. A friend and I were looking for a party and passed this place several times before finding our way. I was sure at that time that the real party was going down here. We got a good laugh about how the name, T-bone, fit the location, on a random corner on the outskirts of two towns. I think their were even a group of sweet motorcycles parked out front. The amusement continued when we read the fine print, “Chinese-American Cuisine” and noticed the bright dragon lights above the door. The name didn’t seem to match the food classification. T-bones Chinese? From that day, I knew that sooner or later my destiny would again lead me back to this junction.

Just yesterday my dear mother needed a ride to an appointment in Springville. I obliged to be chauffeur and as we neared the destination my stomach started to grumble. Once I dropped her off, I knew exactly where I was going to go… T-bone! I was in the mood for a little adventure. As I walked into the little cafe I felt as if I were being transported into another world. It was nice to get away from my own for while. With no one to greet me, I debated between sitting at the charcoal counter top near the kitchen or in the booths separated from the rest of the eatery by Lattice fencing. The formal seating looked more crowded with a few groups already seated so I chose the bar…

The little old lady absentmindedly staring into space at the end of the bar relieved all my apprehensions about this establishment. No workers were readily in sight except for a little Asian boy with a lazy eye of about 11 years meandering behind the bar. I wasn’t sure if he was just hanging out with mom at work or whether he was working himself. My question was soon answered as he handed me a menu and asked what I would be drinking. Resisting the temptation to tell him I wanted a scotch, I asked for a water with lemon. He awkwardly grabbed a glass, robotically filled it FULL of ice, and briskly threw in a lemon. Before I knew it, I had my water and he was equipped with a rag to wipe off tables. A petite Asian woman with a matching lazy eye made her way to me and asked what I wanted. At this point, life couldn’t get any better and I was ready to throw down any amount of money. I asked for her recommendation, fully intending to order whatever it was that she suggested. “Do you do spicy?” “I do.” Pointing to the menu she said, “This is good” “Done!” Nothing but business… that’s how we do. My trust in her paid off! The egg drop soup really hit the spot on such a shockingly cold day and the main dish was not only tasty but very well-proportioned.

I sat for some time in silence just taking in the atmosphere and observing the proceedings happening around me. The elderly woman at the end of the bar was continually called, “grandma” by the boy although I couldn’t tell if there was any real biological connection between them. A young girl came out from the back to help her mom take payments at the register and help with customers. The majority of the clientele knew the working-family members by name and carried out very pleasant conversations. I enjoyed the friendly local climate. About half-way through my meal I had some time to kill so I grabbed a book from my car. Slowly, I continued to munch on my meal while absorbing the content. As the time passed, the bar filled and I was frequently distracted from my reading. Soon enough, it was time to leave.

Someday, I will return to this place to study. Highly recommend it. I mean check out the decoration!

Thank you T-bone Restaurant! I was momentarily able to forget life. This was a refreshing experience that reminded me how much I love exploring new places and travelling. I needed reminding…

“Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it.”

Happy Movember First! Many of you have definitely heard of “No Shave November.” But do you know about “Movember”? Let’s just say that growing out my mustache for the last month has given me an “in” to the mustache community. I notice all the guys on campus who have mustaches and occasionally we share a glance of approval. I’m officially “one of them” now and my keen mustache senses are developing. That is how I stumbled upon this little beauty, “Movember”. “Mustache season,” as stated in this blog “has officially commenced and for the Month of Movember (formally known as November) Men are encouraged to grow a MO, keep that top lip warm and raise money for the Prostrate Cancer Charity.”

That’s right… grow a mustache for a good cause! Check out all the details at the official Movember website I registered today and am going to see if I can raise some dough! I’m a little bit of a cheater, though, because my mustache growing started about a month ago and I just can’t get myself to shave it and start over. Oh well! Here’s to a good cause!

Brethren and Sistren… the time has come to get your mustaches on! Join the cause! Dad…. Keith…. I’m calling out to you! Grow your mustaches proudly! Take the challenge!

“A man without a mustache is like a cup of tea without sugar”
-English Proverb
